2) Method for Detecting Acrylic Size
Subject a sample fabric (an original fabric or a treated fabric) to the heat treatment of 90°C×20min. with DESCO AP CONC 5g/L. Dye this heat-treated fabric and an untreated fabric with cationic dye rhodamine B, and rinse them with water. After drying the dyed fabrics, judge the presence of acrylic size by observing the dyeing difference between the fabrics.

3) Qualitative Analysis for Acrylic Size

Desizing is performed by the above method. A judgment as to whether the complete desizing has been achieved or not is based on the criterion that no starch and PVA are detected with the boric iodine solution. In some cases, however, PVA is difficult to remove completely. In such cases, at least 0.3 of the boric iodine coloration should be achieved.
After the complete desizing, dry the fabric at 100°C for one hour in an oven, and then leave the fabric in the incubating room for another one night. After that, weigh the fabric in the same manner as described above. Calculate the weight difference between the previously weighed sample fabric and the completely desized fabric, to obtain the total size amount of the fabric. The calculation method is as follows.

Note:

  1. A fabric sized with starch first needs to be desized using PAS-600 and then treated with DESCO AP CONC.
  2. Rhodamine B solution: rhodamine B 0.002%, acetic acid 0.2%
  3. Excessive rinsing after dyeing may wash away rhodamine B. Do not directly pour tap water onto a fabric, but rinse the fabric in a container with water.
  4. The judgment is easy for polyester fabrics, but is difficult for cotton fabrics due to staining. The judgment is also difficult for Nylon and wool fabrics.
  5. After heating the rhodamine B solution up to 40°C, place the fabric therein. Stop heating the solution once placing the fabric. In a case where uneven dyeing is likely to occur, add DESCO SOFT 900 1g/L.
  6. Do not directly iron the fabric, but iron it with a white fabric in between.
